11th August 1965: Sam leaps into Lester ‘Ray’ Jordan, an African-American medical student controversially engaged to Susan Bond, the white daughter of the local police captain. The couple’s relationship is viewed with anger and disgust by Ray’s brother, Lonnie, and only serves to increase the racial tension felt in the neighbourhood. Sam learns from Al that he has arrived on the eve of the notorious Watts Riots, a violent and bloody disturbance that erupted on the streets of Los Angeles after two African-Americans were arrested by white police officers for a minor vehicle violation; thirty-five people were killed in the six-day riots, and Sam’s mission is to keep Ray and Susan together amidst the mayhem. As history follows its course fighting breaks out on the streets, stores are firebombed and the police call out the national guard – with their friends and family dying around them, can Ray and Susan survive amidst the chaos?
